Plastic No More

If you are in the Philippines, and you hear people calling you "plastic". Bear in mind that it doesn't meant to complement your "break-resistant" body or talks about how "indispensable" you are in the team or how "shiny" your hair looks. "Plastic", my friend is actually a slang word for "fake" and "backstabber". So if someone calls you that, just go and punch him in the face ---->Just kidding! a confrontation would usually work with these people. Just make sure you have a witness when the confrontation happens (too bad for you if the witness is also "plastic". lol) :p

Anyway, just to be clear, this post is not about the many "plastic" people that lurks around in the dark and sneaks at your back then pretends to be your friend by constantly smiling at you or sometimes even giving you an occasional hug or worst a "Judas" kiss; or from time to time will engage you with small talks waiting for you to say something wrong or personal so he/she can broadcast it to the whole world. The plastic that I'm gonna talk about is the molecular structure that was invented in 1868 by a young  painter John Wesley who mixed pyroxylin and nitric acid with camphor (whatever that is). The plastic that changed the whole world and can be seen in almost anything that we possess and use.

Although it has contributed a lot in the formation of our society. Nobody can deny that mismanagement and improper disposal of plastic wastes and products created an irreversible effect in our environment. Plastics and Styro started the mountains of garbages in waste dump sites (since they are non-biodegradable) and of course, it clogs our drainage systems because our land simply overflows with plastics. That is why, I am so happy that another city has joined the good fight in managing plastic/styro use. It has been a great debate whether or not paper bags are really good alternatives of plastic bags but I am a believer that paper bags are much environment friendly since they are recyclable materials plus you can always bring your own bag day when doing shopping right?. :) This March, the municipality of Bacoor Cavite, led by Mayor Strike Revilla supported Municipal Ordinance No. 14-S-2002 that prohibits the use and distribution of plastic bags and polystyrene (styrofoam).

The "No Plastic" rule was actually started by Los Banos City in 2008 and then followed by Muntinlupa City on October 13, 2010. And for the past 3 years, this rule has been creeping its way to the many cities all over the country today. Some of them are:

Las Pinas City, MM
Marikina City, MM
Quezon City, MM
Antipolo, Rizal
Legazpi City, Albay
Lucena City, Quezon
Lucban, Quezon
Infanta, Quezon
Sta. Barbara, Iloilo
Burgos, Pangasinan
General Trias, Cavite
Bacolod City, Negros
San Pablo City, Laguna - (on public offices and establishments within the perimeter of provincial capitol compound city)
Calamba City, Laguna
Los Banos, Laguna
San Pedro, Laguna
Nagcarlan, Laguna
Tacloban City, Leyte - (public offices only)
Masbate City, Masbate

while Subic Bay Freeport  plans to implement it on June 30, 2012
MakatiCity, MM ( by 2013)
Pasay City, MM (by Oct 2012)

I know there are more cities out there already implementing the no plastic/styro rule, the ones above are just some of those that have news about it in the net when I was doing research about this new ordinance. If you're city is one of them, tell me and I'll be happy to update this list.
